Taraji P Henson - 'Sherry Parker' in The Karate Kid
Tackling a role in a movie that's part of a franchise that people love, do you feel a little extra weight bringing the series back to life?Taraji P Henson: "No, not that I've seen it now. I didn't feel that way when I read the script. It all starts with the script and when I read the script I was like, 'Wow, this is an incredible remake. I want to be a part of it.'"
And I'm sure they jumped at the chance to have you as a part of it.
Taraji P Henson: "Yeah, and I didn't know that until we got to Beijing. I thought that I was going to have to fight for the role. And when I get to Beijing, Will and Jada and all the other producers are like, 'Oh my god, we can't believe we got you.' And I'm like [looking over her shoulder to see who they're talking about.]"
Of course they're like that.
Taraji P Henson: "'I would have paid you to be in this movie.'"
Because you have like 37 movies coming up.
Taraji P Henson: "Did you hear that? Where are the other 36?"
Being a single mom, did you really relate to this character?
Taraji P Henson: "Absolutely I related. And the script was just done with so much taste. Like you really get to see where this kid gets his 'get up and fight' from. You know, this woman loses her job, she's a single mother and she loses her job in Detroit and she gets a call to go to Beijing. She's got to do it; her back is against the wall, you know? And she's a fighter so therefore he's a fighter. They did it really well. I'm really proud."
And you bonded well with Jaden?
Taraji P Henson: "Very well. It was so easy. It's easy. He's such an outgoing personality so it was easy."
